question: are you doing the focal part in max or AE?
the focus is a trick... bring your render into photoshop, copy it into another layer, Gaussian blur the hell out of the bottom layer (7-10 pts with a 1280x1024), and create a layer mask on the top layer. in the mask, make a radial gradient going from white in the center to black at the edge, the center being where everything is in focus. so what happens is you get this nice transparent dissolve, masking out the sharp image at the edges, but leaving the focused part (the white area in the mask) intact. I actually figured that one out myself, but I'm sure its a well known trick (its so easy!) adds that dramatic effect to almost ANY picture.
